“He set another man before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard-seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field; which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches.”
Your mind is the field
I think, the field in this parable, is our own existence, our mind. The seeds are thoughts and emotions that we plant in the soil, or landscape, of our mind. Our mind is full of seeds of all kinds – hatred, anger, frustration, happiness, joy, hope, misery, revenge, charity, taking, giving, love, prayer, etc.
Every seed is available to the gardener – us; to be sown in our fields – our minds. We choose which seeds we want to sow. Many times, some seeds will automatically be sown by society, events, our upbringing, the past, or the happenings of the present. At times, we may not be able to completely control which seeds get lodged in our garden, but it is completely in our control, which seeds get nurtured so they may take root and grow.
We choose what grows in our gardens
In our gardens, we choose which seeds to sow. And at times a seed may get lodged and manage to germinate. But a good gardener immediately weeds out any unnecessary growths. We make every effort to protect our rose bush, our orchids, and our fruit trees. We nurture them, take care of them, water them regularly. We make sure there are no weeds growing around them. We pull out anything that could destroy the plants that give us happiness. We kill any parasite that may attack our good plants. We make all effort to ensure that our good plants grow to their full potential. And then we enjoy when bees pollinate them in the summer. The butterflies flutter in our garden, because of the plants. Birds nest, and sing, in our trees. Our garden comes alive because of all the good plants, and the absence of the bad plants. We make sure nothing unwanted remains in our heavenly garden – our Kingdom of Heaven.
A tiny seed can grow into the strongest tree
The Mustard seed is one of the smallest of plant seeds, but if nurtured and protected, it can grow into a powerful tree. While we make sure the mustard seed grows, we also need to make sure that its enemy plants don’t grow around it.
Happiness is the only purpose of life
If happiness is your purpose in life, as it should be, then you need to weed out all sadness. They are both energies, and not physical existences, thus in your power completely. If you can learn to cherish the moment, you will have absolute power over your emotions, If you are conscious and watchful of your garden, you will pull out any seeds of unhappiness, fear, discontent, or other negative energies. Even if the bad seeds manage to germinate, a vigilant gardener will weed them out, as soon as possible.
Nip them in the bud
If you stay vigilant and present in the moment, if you are mindful – you will notice any negativity breeding within you. Once you become aware of these negative events, you will then have the power to eliminate them, nip them in the bud. Before long, your garden will have nothing but good plants, positive emotions. And once the environment is healthy, the tiny Mustard seed will surely erupt, and grow into a strong tree. The birds of the air will nest and sing in these trees.
Your garden will be heavenly. You will live in the Kingdom of Heaven.
